Girl Education - Kyangwali, DR Congo - Peopleweaver

One on One - Meet Girls Overlooked

Education statistics, most of us have heard them:

• Globally 263 million children and youth are out of school; 61 million primary-school-aged children and over 200 million adolescents
• More than 114 million youth around the world cannot read
• Roughly half a billion women around the world cannot read

Large numbers are overwhelming, mean little, are difficult to visualize and comprehend.

We originally thought, “what is education if there are no jobs?” Hence our original focuses on microcredit. As we spent time in the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement (Uganda) our opinions changed. Groups of kids that should have been in school followed us everywhere. During our microcredit meetings the women said they never went to school or their education was stopped because of war. These women mourn the loss of their education and desperately want their children to go to school.

TOLD IN THEIR OWN WORDS, MEET SOME OF THE FORGOTTEN GIRLS.

Girls looking at a National Geographic magazine, very likely the first book they've seen. They should be in school. (Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Uganda)
